Some instructors use video technology to record the finer points of a golfer’s swing, and use computer-generated motion analysis on playback to provide tips for improving techniques. Players often get to take the videos home to practice.
This video covers the pre-shot routine. PGA professional Mike Bender explains why the routine is so important and how to develop one for yourself. He shows you from beginning to end the elements of a good pre-shot routine. You will learn what most amateurs do wrong with their routine and how many seconds a good pre-shot routine typically lasts.

Personally I believe the best way to help golfers through online instruction is to give them tools to make their practice sessions more effective, and change their perspective on the game overall. It’s one thing to explain technical knowledge of the golf swing, but I’m more concerned with the real-world application of that knowledge. So while online instruction is somewhat imperfect, I do believe there are certain instructors and resources who are giving out good information.
It is important to learn golf etiquette before you head out to the course on your own. Your coach will teach you about dress code, where to walk or drive on the course, and the meaning of tee time. It is also important to know how to keep yourself and others safe while you are playing. Be sure to pay attention to these topics in your golf lessons.

Many golfers believe that creating lag is a matter of holding a wrist angle and really pulling down, keeping the wrist and forearm tight and just praying you can keep the angle through the downswing.
At the heart of his teaching is the need to set up squarely and consistently to the ball, and one of his recent product innovations is the 2Thumb putter grip (click here for Golf Today’s review of this product) to help players achieve this. His teaching is easy to grasp and simple to apply, like these 18 tips to better putting.
In contrast to other sports, in golf the ball doesn’t move prior to hitting it. This means you can and should carefully position yourself while you set up for a shot. We cover the many aspects of the golf setup in this section, from alignment, stance, distance to the ball, ball position, position of the hands, posture as well as the golf grip.
This completes the “set up” and the pair now go on to discuss the swing. Piers demonstrates a short swing which only drives the ball a short distance. He then shows a longer swing, thus driving the ball further.

Ask any good putter what separates him or her from the crowd, and they’ll most likely say, “My ability to bury the short ones, inside three feet, almost all the time.” Sure, crazy lipouts or spike marks happen, but if you really want to shave strokes off your card and be a master of the Read more…

Pro tip: For at least 10% of your practice, putt with just one ball and treat it like you would on the course.  Mark the ball, read the putt, and go through your routine before rolling it.  It will help you find the rhythm that you will use when you’re actually on the course.
This putting tip is easy, but often overlooked. Once you have decided on a putting style and a line to the basket, commit! Make up your mind and don’t while you’re in the process of putting. If you become unsure, step back and re-evaluate.

Tossing the putter with as little spin as possible by flicking with supporting fingers and snapping at the hips. Less spin helps to keep the putter flight pure and on a straight line as well as reduce chain spit-outs and less wrist movement helps with consistency. Doesn’t feel as natural and is more difficult to putt from long distances.
A lot of golfers have putters that are too long for them. Your hands and arms should hang down in a relaxed, neutral position… so grip the putter where they fall – even if it means gripping right at the bottom of the grip or even getting your putter shortened.

When most beginner golfers first start learning how to swing a golf club, they do what feels right and don’t know to focus on developing a stroke that follows a proper swing plane. However, staying on the swing plane is essential to maintain a solid and consistent golf stroke, so it’s important to teach the concept of the swing plane to beginners right away. In this lesson, we teach you a simple beginner golf swing drill you can utilize to ensure your swing follows the proper path away from and through the ball, each and every time.
These series of video tips go over the remaining areas of the golf game not yet examined. The tips on course management explore how to make better decision around the golf course, prior to addressing the ball. The practice tips examine how you can improve faster through better use of your time spent on the driving range. Mental game tips cover the importance of focusing in golf, and in putting yourself in a situation to succeed. Finally, golf equipment tips cover what clubs to put in your golf bag and how the custom golf fitting process works.

That’s number one in my book. From there then you can build confidence because your putter face is aiming where you want the ball to go. A lot of amateur mistakes can get fixed if they just have a square putter face and a balanced position at address. With Trackman, 80% of where the ball is going to start begins with where the face is aimed. In putting, it’s probably 99, 98%. So if you can aim the face straight where you want then you can read the greens better because your putts are going to start on the correct line. You might read it left edge, but you have your putter face aimed right edge then the ball starts on the right edge and breaks, then you think ‘man, I can’t read greens’ and then I say ‘no, you weren’t aiming it where you wanted to aim it!’
There’s nothing stopping you from improving your golf game.  Head to the green with these putting drills and wear them out!  Commit at least 1 hour per week to working on these drills you’ll be shooting lower scores in no time.
You don’t really think about how a ball is going to go into the hoop if you’re playing basketball, or a pass in football. You just think about delivering the ball to that person. We tend to over-think putting.
In a standard golf club set, you will find irons ranging from 1 to 9, but most sets have irons ranging from 3 to 9. A 3, 4 and 5 iron are typically quite difficult to hit, especially if you are a beginner. This is because the sole of these clubs are narrower than the higher irons, making it hard to get under the ball. The golf industry has solved this problem with the introduction of hybrids, which replace lower number irons. Irons vary in loft from the lower irons in the late teens to the higher irons which have loft as high as 50 degrees. Irons are designed to help you slice through thick lies because of their narrow sole and higher lofts, compared to woods. Normally, irons are played off the ground (fairway or rough), however; in the case of par 3s, players can use a tee to make it easier to get under the ball. The best irons for beginners have a large offset of the club face from the shaft. This means the club face is set back off the shaft and helps starter players get under the ball. You should also look for a wide sole and dispersed weighting system to increase the sweet spot.

Confidence: (10 Minutes) The best putters in the world have the ability to read greens and judge distance correctly. They also have solid alignment routines and fundamentally sound putting mechanics. Their rhythm is flawless and consistent. But these things wouldn’t make them great putters unless they got used to making putts and getting the sensory feedback of seeing and hearing the ball dive into the hole. There’s only one way to get this confidence: Make more putts.
So how can you, the novice golfer, move from the awkward early phase to the next level, where you routinely get the ball airborne, finish holes without picking up and hit numerous shots every round that bring you back for more?
Not just for your feet but also knees, hips, shoulders and club face. Most right-handed golfers aim right but this doesn’t always mean the ball will go right as often their swing will compensate for poor alignment. Check your alignment every practice session for the rest of your life!
Every GOLFTEC Game Plan includes video-based practice, providing you with the most productive practice sessions possible through immediate visual feedback. It’s as simple and convenient as pushing a button with your club to control the video of your swing, right from the hitting mat. You can even use video drawing tools to add lines that make it easy to check your swing plane, club angle and body positions.
If you’re 6 feet or taller, use a 34 1/2-inch putter, and if you’re 5 feet 10 inches to 5 feet 11 tall, use a 34-inch putter. Golfers who are 5 feet 9 to 5 feet 10 should use a 33 1/2-inch putter and a 33-inch putter if you’re 5 feet 5 to 5 feet 8 tall. If you’re 5 feet 3 to 5 feet 4 tall, a 32 1/2-inch putter is the correct size and a 32-inch putter fits a golfer who is 5 feet 1 to 5 feet 2. Guidelines recommend a 31 1/2-inch putter if you’re 4 feet 11 to 5 feet tall, and a 31-inch putter should be used by golfers shorter than 4 feet 11.

Many amateur players have very active hands and wrist when putting. Best Instructional Books on Putting: Plenty of golf instructors have written books about the art and science of putting. Which of those books are the best? Here are nine picks for ones you can’t go wrong with.
If you watch a good chipper you’ll see that their backswing and follow through are similar sizes. You see a lot of golfers who struggle with chipping making big backswings with little follow through or the opposite, making a small backswing and over accelerating into the ball. A balanced chip shot swing leads to good tempo and makes it easier to deliver the clubface solidly on the back of the ball. It also reduces the desire to “hit” the ball when chipping. Good chippers make a smooth balanced swing and let the ball get in the way. Make some practice strokes with your chipping club and feel the club moving back and forth in nice balanced and smooth motion. Do this without a ball until you get the feeling then add the golf ball. The goal with the ball is the maintain that same balance and tempo. This will lead to solid shots and better distance control.
One of the first things that you need to master is your swing. We found a great video by Andy Proudman and Piers Ward which has had nearly four million views. It’s called Golf Swing Made Simple and runs for less than seven minutes.
Golf training products generally fall into 3 categories – books, videos, or physical training aid. Each format has its inherent strengths and weaknesses. Books are generally the least expensive, but obviously can’t demonstrate motion as well as video. Training aids have the ability to interact directly with YOUR swing, but generally they can only address 1 aspect of the swing. Video does a great job showing the motions of the swing and can be comprehensive, but is generally more expensive.

By learning the fundamentals of How To Play Golf, of course. It may not sound exciting or sexy, but don’t knock it till you’ve tried it. The golf swing becomes much simpler when it’s built on a solid base of these four elements:
Golf (also known as Polish Polka, Polish Poker, Turtle, Hara Kiri, Poison, or Crazy Nines[1]) is a card game where players try to earn the lowest number of points (as in golf, the sport) over the course of nine deals (or “holes” to further use golfing terminology). It is a game for four or more players using a double-deck of 108 cards, and has little in common with its solitaire cousin.

Your tendency is to scan the putt from the ball to the hole and back again, or vertically. That’s a good way to determine if the putt is moving uphill or downhill, but it doesn’t help you see how much side-to-side tilt you face. You’ll glean more information by scanning the putt horizontally. Making a side-to-side assessment in your green-reading routine will have you judging break like a cagey pro. Here’s how:

The problem is that when most golfers practice, they want to go out and bang as many range balls with their driver as they can before a round. If they simply spent some of that time on the practice green, they would quickly see improved scores. The green seems to be the mortal enemy for many golfers, and it doesn’t have to be.  Here are three great putting drills to add to your arsenal that will help you become a better putter and consequently, a better golfer.

Establishing an identical pre-shot routine is essential. Place three balls in a row along the same line at equal distances.  I suggest 3, 6, and 9 feet to start.  Roll putts starting from the ball closest to the hole and moving outward.  This is a great drill to find rhythm before heading out on the course, or when you’re finishing up your practice for the day.

The best irons for beginners have a large offset of the club face from the shaft. This means the club face is set back off the shaft and helps starter players get under the ball. You should also look for a wide sole and dispersed weighting system to increase the sweet spot.
Not just for your feet but also knees, hips, shoulders and club face. Most right-handed golfers aim right but this doesn’t always mean the ball will go right as often their swing will compensate for poor alignment. Check your alignment every practice session for the rest of your life!
The first thing she wanted to address was my hunched over posture.  To illustrate her point, she positioned my swing adjacent with that of Rory McIlroy’s.  There was something humbling about seeing my swing in contrast to Rory’s and even my instructor sheepishly noted that it wasn’t her intention to “compare” my swing with the world’s No. 1 golfer.  Rory, of course, has model posture at setup.  He also has a neutral takeaway; mine is to the inside.  My instructor filmed a nine-minute segment picking apart my swing, explaining how posture and takeaway influence the chain of events that follow.  Her analysis concluded with a pair of additional videos that described corrections that I could incorporate into my swing.
The top half of your body should be towards a horizontal position, ie your shoulders, neck and back of your head. If you are standing too upright, there is a tendency to direct the weight of your body towards your heels. You should be looking straight down over the ball and through the centre of your eye and not out of the lower part of the eye.
Fees average $50 to $60 for a 30- to 45-minute private lesson. Instructors sometimes offer hour-long sessions for $75 to $90, which is a better overall value. There is usually no cost break for children’s lessons.
That said, there are a few things your should look for in a good starter putter. First, if your putter has an alignment feature this is a plus as it helps line up your putts. Secondly, a good weighted putter provides more stability when you are starting out.
Now you have gripped the putter correctly, it is important to realise that the length of the shaft is the predominant factor in getting your eyes directly over the ball, as this is important for getting a consistence in reading the putting line from ball to hole, or target point. This line is always the same, whether 3 ft or 30 ft long.

We’re going to reiterate that planning is important, even while you’re on the course. The best disc golfers don’t just throw and hope they get a good lie. They observe the environment and layout of the course and identify whey they want to putt from. Think of the following factors when deciding the best putting position.

Fairway woods can range from a 3 wood to a 7, or even 9 wood. The loft for a 3W is generally between 12 and 17 degrees. Some sets also include a 5-wood with a loft between 18 and 23 degrees. Fairway woods can be hit off the tee and as the name suggests, on the fairway too. Most of the fairway woods have large heads that are quite similar to the driver, but they are shallower and boast a lower sweet spot, pointing towards the bottom of the club. Graphite shafts are also desirable in your fairway woods.

True improvement requires more than a quick fix or sporadic lessons. Rather than overwhelm you with too many changes at once, your Coach focuses on a simple, step-by-step approach to ensure consistent improvement and performance. As each change is mastered, your Coach builds on that to achieve the best swing possible that you can comfortably repeat on the golf course. Sequential learning is the fastest approach to achieve lasting results.

Here’s a really good drill. Get three or four balls and start at 10 feet. Drop each one two feet apart, putt the first one and gradually work your way back to 50 feet. Learn what it feels like to hit those different putts. Do this as opposed to dropping balls down in one spot and whacking one six feet past and the next one six feet short. If you’re really struggling, start at two feet and end at 20 feet.
We have a 3 month ‘Get into Golf’ programme that combines coaching the swing and short game with some play on the golf course. Realising that this is a big, daunting step for some, our programme makes the step much easier with our coach being there and helping with the process. We feel that beginners starting on the Golf Course with other beginners reduces the nerves and helps create confidence.

There are conventional putters (the usual mid-30-inch-length flatsticks), plus long putters and belly putters. And while anchoring a putter has been banned by the governing bodies, using a longer-than-standard putter remains perfectly OK under the rules.
Place three balls in a row along the same line at equal distances.  I suggest 3, 6, and 9 feet to start.  Roll putts starting from the ball closest to the hole and moving outward.  This is a great drill to find rhythm before heading out on the course, or when you’re finishing up your practice for the day.
Taking lessons simply makes learning the game much easier, and improvement in your play takes place much quicker. Which will increase your enjoyment. Not to mention the safety of those around you on the golf course!
Putting is a game within a game. Being able to swing the golf club well will mean very little if you are always three putting when you reach the green. A good stroke can make up for almost anything and if you can develop a sound technique you’ll see more putts drop – guaranteed. However, putting is more art than science. If you can devote time to putting in practice your feel on the greens is bound to improve. You can accelerate this progress by using some of our best drills. Our putting tips section will make you deadly from short range and help you avoid dreaded three putts. It’s a must read for anyone looking to shoot lower scores.

Whilst it is important to get your upper body and balance position correct, one of the most crucial parts of your putting stroke is to understand is the positioning of the legs – actually your knees. Make a putting stroke and see what happens. Move did they? Why?
Could be a push putt or spin putt. Straddled legs with a hip thrust limits the number of moving joints and reduces side to side movement to greatly improve consistency. Squaring up to the basked can reduce power and distance and may take time to get used to.
Make Sure Your Goals and Commitment Match: A golf instructor can do wonders with your game, but he can’t do it alone. To make golf lessons worthwhile, you must be able to follow up on them by continuing to work on the instructor’s suggestions on your own time. The higher your goals, the more work will be required. Be realistic in your goals and make sure you can offer the commitment necessary to meet those goals.

Dangle your arms in front of you and clap your hands together with palms facing, before gripping the handle of the putter softly. Ensure the back of the left hand follows through on the line on which you want the ball to roll.
A couple more items: I recommend that you hold the club in your palms so that your forearms and the shaft are on the same plane; this makes them work as one unit. Your shoulders should be parallel to the target line. The back of your neck should be close to horizontal, which will allow your shoulders to move more up and down, which makes the putter swing in a straighter line. It is important that you understand that the set-up will allow the putter to swing in a straight line; you should not try to manipulate the putter with your hands and arms.
Often, beginners can borrow clubs from the pro or use demonstration clubs for lessons. When it is time to buy clubs, the pro can make recommendations about the types of clubs to buy and the features to look for. For example, beginners with a slow swing speed can benefit from a flexible shaft, large clubface and higher lofted clubs. The pro might recommend that new players use a 3-wood off the tee instead of a driver, and use higher lofted fairway woods. Pros often suggest using hybrid clubs instead of long irons such as the 3-iron and 4-iron because they are designed to launch the ball easily and allow for distance and accuracy.
As I have already covered in the section on drivers above, the best drivers have a large head size. Ranging from 440-460cc. I recommend you look for a driver with a head size greater than 440 cc. This will maximize the sweet spot and provide loads of forgiveness on mishits.

Here’s how:

While playing golf you will also encounter trouble shots on a regular basis. These shots have lie conditions that differ from the normal good lie on a flat surface. As such, they require adjustments to your swing in order to produce the results you are looking for. These video golf tips explore how to hit trouble shots.

What I’m learning now, in addition to swinging a club correctly, is to hold myself more accountable for my golf game.  Taking online golf lessons is akin to walking a tightrope without a safety net.  There’s nobody around to observe your every swing and make corrections.  In truth, this is more indicative of how golf is actually played – on your own, with nothing but the space between your ears to guide you.  In an interview with pgatour.com, Sean Foley was asked if he envisioned a time when Tiger Woods wouldn’t need a coach.
To hit a chip shot solid you need to hit the golf ball, then the ground. In order to achieve this you must strike the ball at or before the bottom of the swing. Getting your weight and golf club leaning slightly forward at the setup are excellent ways to improve contact. At the setup feel 60% of your weight on the forward foot. It will feel as though back shoulder is higher than your front shoulder. This sets your swing into a steeper position allowing for a solid hit. Now the key is to keep the weight there during the swing. Next get the shaft leaning slightly toward the target. A good reference point is to have the grip of the club even with the middle of your forward thigh. This along with leaning forward add just enough steepness to allow for a solid hit on the golf ball.
I’m a great believer that if you practice with purpose, you need a lot less of it. I see so many golfers on a day-to-day basis who just pound in the hope that pure repetition will lead to success. In my experience, it doesn’t.
Playing golf is a great way to spend time outdoors while enjoying some gentle exercise. Golf instruction can get you started or help you improve your game. Once you know the basics, you can enjoy the time you spend out on the course without getting frustrated. If you plan to compete in amateur, club or professional competitions, golf lessons will be essential to your training plan.

As you rest the putter on the ground, position your hands so that the grip of the putter points towards your left hip, just left of your belt buckle (for the right-handed golfer). Your hands should be slightly ahead of the golf ball.

2. “Walk” off the distance with your stroke. From the side of the putt, point your putter at the ball, then pass it over an imaginary line running from the ball to the cup at the same speed you want the putt to roll (above). Moving your putterhead from the ball to the hole at the proper speed when you’re calculating distance helps your brain move your arms and putter with the correct amount of energy when you putt the ball for real. Yes, you can do this by simply scanning your eyes over the line, but studies prove that using your eyes and hands in tandem enhances brain performance much more than using only your eyes.
Next up is a description of the body motion during the swing. Piers shows you how to practise this without a golf club. You put your arms around your front and “hug” yourself. Then you place the feet into the correct position as described earlier and “wind up” the body keeping the lower body stable. You then move your body towards the target and turn your body. The weight is now all on your lead leg and the other foot just has the toes in contact with the ground, the spikes of your shoes pointing away behind you. The right knee is “on top” of the left knee.
There’s no question that missing putts is the easiest way to put a bloated number on the scorecard. A great drive and a fantastic approach shot can be nullified by a couple of missed putts, and the next thing you know, you are putting a bogey or worse instead of a birdie or par. Sure, it’s frustrating, but like anything, to get better you have to practice.

We get it. Golf can seem terribly complicated to the uninitiated. So many rules, so many different kinds of clubs. And then there’s the lingo: birdies, bogeys, bump-and-runs. At Golf Digest, this may be the language we speak every day, but we also know it’s a language that can scare prospective golfers off before they ever pick up a club.

Set a manilla folder on the practice green 6-10 feet away from you on a level surface.  Roll putts and try to have them stop on the folder.  The fast surface of the folder is difficult to hold, making you have to focus on the speed of your putt.  This drill really comes in handy on the slippery short ones.

It’s a simple fact: if you can put the ball in the fairway consistently, you give yourself a great chance at par or better. Conversely, miss the fairway on a regular basis and you give yourself a headache.
While playing golf you will also encounter trouble shots on a regular basis. These shots have lie conditions that differ from the normal good lie on a flat surface. As such, they require adjustments to your swing in order to produce the results you are looking for. These video golf tips explore how to hit trouble shots.

While playing golf with friends offers hours of entertainment, the best way to improve your game is to take golf instruction from a professional. A golf instructor can help you work on your swing, as well as provide you with valuable golf tips for tackling awkward holes. When you book private golf lessons, you can choose which aspects of the game you most need to work on, whether that is wood or iron play, tips for teeing off, or clinching the perfect score once you reach the green.
One tool used by teaching pros to analyze a new golfer’s swing is videotape. Showing the beginner exactly what he is doing wrong can be an effective method in correcting swing faults. The pro can also offer drills to the student for specific purposes. For example, to encourage a complete shoulder turn, the pro may suggest a drill visualizing a vertical line above the ball. When making the backswing, the golfer can strive to have his left shoulder pass the line to the right, and have his right shoulder pass the line to the left on the downswing and follow through.
Torrey Pines was also designed by William P Bell, and completed by his son William F Bell. Opened in 1957, and owned and maintained by the city, it has two 18-hole courses along with a driving range, practice putting greens, food and beverage carts and a restaurant. Regarded as one of the world’s top courses, the fog, rain and wind that sweep across its ocean-side location make this a challenging course for even the most seasoned players.
Nice article. However I must ask how can a golf coach possibly tell you what you are doing wrong without seeing your ball flight? I presume you notified the online golf coach of your bad shot and with that information the coach could link your ball flight with the adequate faults in your swing.

Ask any good putter what separates him or her from the crowd, and they’ll most likely say, “My ability to bury the short ones, inside three feet, almost all the time.” Sure, crazy lipouts or spike marks happen, but if you really want to shave strokes off your card and be a master of the Read more…

For most golfers, finding time to practice putting is difficult. In fact, it’s no easy task to find time to improve in any area of the game. Therefore, it’s essential that players not only create practice opportunities whenever they can, but also budget practice time to maximize effectiveness and create better habits.
Grip the putter any way you like, as long as it doesn’t hinder your left hand’s role in the stroke. But make sure to grip the club in your fingers. The shaft should run up the lifeline of your left hand for clubface control, but your fingers must contact the grip. You can drop the right forefinger down the shaft, but don’t steer with it. Forget about what your palms are doing. Fingers equal feel.
4) Arm Swing:_Ê In a good putting stroke, the arms should move freely from the shoulders and swing so that there’s no wrist activity. A good tool to check your arm swing is to place a golf tee in the end of your grip. With a good motion, the golf tee, your arms and the putterhead will move together to the target. Trouble occurs if the putterhead moves forward as the golf tee moves away from the target.
Golf instruction is the art of equipping and training golfers to play better golf through improved awareness of swing cause and effects as a result of the actions by their body, the club, and their effect on the golf ball. Most great golfers have a few common elements that make them great including: proper intentionality, swing repeatability to produce an action that fits the golfers intentionality, and a strong level of automaticity for long lasting enjoyment of the game golf. Golf instruction is unique as golf consists of five primary skills: shots from a tee (most notable: driving that uses a driver), full shots from the ground (mostly known as “iron shots”, pitching (or 3/4 shots designed for distance control, chipping (short shots around the green the require less than a full swing), putting (1 club preferably “the putter”) and course strategy or gamesmanship.
The final consideration is whether you want to go for new or used clubs. This is generally less relevant for beginners as the club sets for starters are very affordable and therefore we would recommend going with new clubs. But there are times when used clubs offer great value. Either way, remember that you can always trade-in your clubs at the later stage.

Andy begins by pointing out that the object is to hit the ball in a reasonably straight line, but that a lot of beginners think that in that case the swing should be directly behind the ball and follow through in a straight line. However, that is not the case. The club does not travel in a straight line, but in an arc. The club is raised behind the golfer’s body so it is not directly behind the ball. As the swing commences it travels down the first part of the arc and – it is to be hoped – connects with the ball at exactly the point where it will send it in the direction we want, and then continues in its arc finishing up above the golfer’s left shoulder (or right, in the case of a left-handed player).

Alignment is one of those 4 pillars. If you don’t align perfectly every time, the only time you’ll hit a good putt is when you get lucky with a mis-hit or your body compensates (like in the full swing, your subconscious tells your body it needs to make compensatory movements for poor alignment). But none of us want to rely on this as this doesn’t allow for consistent improvement. We all need to know we’re consistently aligned to the target and this putting tip will show you how important it is and what you can do to achieve it.
