You never, ever hit at the ball! You stroke through it. Try putting as normal, probably with a half distance back the same distance through. Did the ball jump and move off line? – and when it slowed, did it take the break quickly? If the ball is hit with a sharp hammer type stroke, the first few inches of the ball’s movement will be airborne.
If you’ve had a poor grip for some time it may feel uncomfortable to change. But it’s well worth the effort. Follow this lesson, keep a club to hand at home or in the office and make a perfect grip feel like second nature…
The problem is that when most golfers practice, they want to go out and bang as many range balls with their driver as they can before a round. If they simply spent some of that time on the practice green, they would quickly see improved scores. The green seems to be the mortal enemy for many golfers, and it doesn’t have to be.  Here are three great putting drills to add to your arsenal that will help you become a better putter and consequently, a better golfer.

Tell me if this sounds familiar. You hit a great drive down the middle of the fairway and nice approach shot just off the edge of the green. You then proceed to mishit the chip and leave yourself a 10 footer for par that you miss. Meanwhile your buddy hits it in the trees off the tee, scrapes his second shot out, and then gets up and down from 40 yards for par beating you on the hole. Makes you want to pull your hair out right? The good news is that it doesn’t have to be like this. With a few simple adjustments you can start hitting more solid chip shots that end up closer to the hole and give you a better chance to save par. Here are 3 easy ways to improve your chip shots:

So after a some soul searching, not too mention being a little poorer in the pocket, I started tinkering with online golf lessons.  With all the different choices that are available, finding the right program and instructor is a lot like auditioning a promising starlet.  A lot can be determined when she starts reading her lines.  One instructor I began working with barely had anything to say about my swing and immediately jumped to recommending that I practice the 9 to 3 drill to improve my sequencing.  His response felt canned, and it probably was since the program consistently pushed its vast library of instructional videos as the primary means for self-improvement.  After a little more research, I dived into using a different, and frankly, more popular online service that let me scrutinize different instructors by viewing actual sample lessons they gave.  I ended up choosing a Golf Digest Top-50 Female Instructor.  The cost of an individual lesson was $30, which could be further reduced by buying a pack of four lessons in advance.  Considering my instructor’s pedigree, $30 was a bargain, and there’s no way I would’ve been able to afford her lesson fee under different circumstances.
Not too many years ago I was a beginner, just like you! My main concern when I was looking to buy a set of beginner golf clubs was making sure that they were right for my skill level, and wouldn’t immediately be redundant as I got better. Fortunately, I made the right choice and today I’m a proud 12 handicapper (and improving!)
This completes the “set up” and the pair now go on to discuss the swing. Piers demonstrates a short swing which only drives the ball a short distance. He then shows a longer swing, thus driving the ball further.
In this video I detail the grip, set up and basic stroke mechanics as well as share a simple drill that will help you to build a strong foundation. Through implementing these suggestions along with a little hard work, you can improve your putting and thus lower scores.

Ask Around: Every golf instructor’s best advertising is his or her past students. To get an idea of the best teachers in your area, ask as many golfers as you know. It’s likely that a handful of names will come up frequently, and that list can be your starting point. You may find someone who has taken lessons and can give a glowing recommendation on a particular instructor – or a warning.
2) Safety Zone Drill: On the green, make a semicircle around the back edge of the hole using the length of your putter as a guide and mark the perimeter with a few tees. From different lengths, practice until you can get 10 putts in a row to come to rest either in the hole or inside this semicircular safety zone.

I am old school without computers and trying to make you Tiger Woods with spine angels on the first lesson is crazy, so watch out for those guys. I want to make sure you know how to grip a club and keep you balance with a beautiful relaxed swing before we move on to anything more difficult. I suggest you try a few instructors to find one who can communicate with you you in a way you understand, but if your a beginner you do not need someone with all the techy computers to start.

It was a key moment in the tournament: Seung-Yul Noh, facing a 14-foot par-saving putt on the 17th hole Sunday to keep his lead at three shots. And compounding matters? A gusty, swirling wind that accentuated TPC Louisiana’s undulating greens.
3. Bring the putter back less.  This point is not only valid to end three putting, but in general to improve putting, and that’s to take the putter back a lesser distance, and speed up through the ball.  This permits for greater control of the putting stroke.  Increased control is gained through acceleration, versus trying to “feel” your path through impact.  This doesn’t just allow that you hit the golf ball cleaner, but additionally by bringing the putter back a smaller distance, you will have better chance of maintaining it on line throughout the putt.

That said, there are a few things your should look for in a good starter putter. First, if your putter has an alignment feature this is a plus as it helps line up your putts. Secondly, a good weighted putter provides more stability when you are starting out.

Anyone who has followed my site for a while knows that practicing the right way is one of the cornerstones of Practical Golf. Matthew Cooke has made that one of the primary focuses of his business Game Like Training. Matthew specializes in performance games that are meant to challenge golfers in their practice sessions and increase skill.
Tossing the putter with as little spin as possible by flicking with supporting fingers and snapping at the hips. Less spin helps to keep the putter flight pure and on a straight line as well as reduce chain spit-outs and less wrist movement helps with consistency. Doesn’t feel as natural and is more difficult to putt from long distances.
Lessons include a half hour of personalized instruction. We use the latest motion analysis technology to dissect your swing in slow motion. Post-lesson, you can review video of your training to learn more about the mechanics of your game.
When you make the stroke, keep the putterhead low to the ground past impact, like Ron is demonstrating (inset). The putter will ascend slightly, but don’t try to hit up on the ball — whoever told you to do that was wrong, because it makes the ball hop.
After choosing a putting style and selecting a few putters to try, the next putting tip is simple: PRACTICE!! No need for explanation here, if you want to be a great disc golfer putter then you have to practice.

Grip the putter any way you like, as long as it doesn’t hinder your left hand’s role in the stroke. But make sure to grip the club in your fingers. The shaft should run up the lifeline of your left hand for clubface control, but your fingers must contact the grip. You can drop the right forefinger down the shaft, but don’t steer with it. Forget about what your palms are doing. Fingers equal feel.

If you stare at the ball too long at address, it’s easy to get brain-locked and hit a bad putt. To avoid this, I don’t even look at the ball. Try looking at a spot just in front of the ball on your target line and rolling the ball over that spot. Put a tee in the ground in front of the ball when you practice (right). This gets you thinking about the target line instead of the stroke–the opposite of what most golfers do.

In terms of golf shafts there are three main considerations: length, flex and material (i.e. graphite vs. steel). In terms of length, standard men’s clubs are generally suitable for males with a height between 5-foot-8-inches and 6-foot-2-inches. If you fall into this range then standard shaft lengths will be just fine. If you are slightly shorter or taller you can probably also get away with standard length clubs, but if you are significantly shorter or taller then you may want to consider custom fitting. Of course, as a beginner you can probably start with standard fitting clubs and then get custom fitted as you get better. The second consideration is staff flex. Flex can range from very “flexy” to stiff. Most clubs are fitted with standard or regular flex shafts, but if you have a very fast swing then you will want to opt for stiff flex. On the other hand if your swing speed is slow then a flexy shaft is better. In general seniors and ladies who can’t generate a fast swing speed should opt for a flexy shit, otherwise I recommend you go with a regular flex to start out. Finally, shafts come in two main material – stainless steel and graphite. Graphite shafts are lighter, which means one can generate more club head speed. Ideally you should go for woods with graphite shafts as with these clubs you are mainly interested in getting as much distance as possible. In terms of irons it is best to stick with steel shafts, although graphite shafts as a beginner isn’t a bad move.

Hi, my name is Kris Ruiter and I am a personal golf coach.  Golf has been a part of my life for over 30 years, with 15 years of those dedicated to teaching. I have enjoyed teaching golf in both Canada and the U.S.A. I have worked with the aspiring playing professional to the new player who has never touched a club in their life.  I love the challenge and the fun of working with players of all levels. One of my favorite teaching days of all time was back to back lessons with a 12 year old girl then an 82 year old man.  Neither of them had ever touched a club before. It was such a fun day…as was the day when one of my competitive players made a career best 9 birdies in a competitive round.

As an optometrist and sports-vision specialist, I know that’s not the case. Many players I work with are “depth-deficient,” perceiving the location of the hole as closer than it is. In some cases, their perceptual error is 25 percent—that means that a 25-footer looks like it only needs to travel 20 feet. Those five feet of misjudgment cost you.

No matter whether you’re a weekend warrior or the Golden Bear himself, we all lose power on our golf swing as we age. It’s just a fact of life that we can’t put as much oomph on the ball as we used to. However, while you may not ever get your longest drive back, there
While playing golf with friends offers hours of entertainment, the best way to improve your game is to take golf instruction from a professional. A golf instructor can help you work on your swing, as well as provide you with valuable golf tips for tackling awkward holes. When you book private golf lessons, you can choose which aspects of the game you most need to work on, whether that is wood or iron play, tips for teeing off, or clinching the perfect score once you reach the green.
That’s number one in my book. From there you can build confidence because your putter face is aiming where you want the ball to go. A lot of amateur mistakes can get fixed if they just have a square putter face and a balanced position at address. With Trackman, 80% of where the ball is going to start begins with where the face is aimed. In putting, it’s probably 99, 98%. So if you can aim the face straight where you want then you can read the greens better because your putts are going to start on the correct line. You might read it left edge, but you have your putter face aimed right edge then the ball starts on the right edge and breaks, then you think ‘man, I can’t read greens’ and then I say ‘no, you weren’t aiming it where you wanted to aim it!’
Learning how to play golf the correct way is key for all beginner golfers to build a solid swing foundation. Once a beginner golfer develops bad habits, it’s much harder to cure and try to unlearn them than it is to get it right from the start.
There’s no question that missing putts is the easiest way to put a bloated number on the scorecard. A great drive and a fantastic approach shot can be nullified by a couple of missed putts, and the next thing you know, you are putting a bogey or worse instead of a birdie or par. Sure, it’s frustrating, but like anything, to get better you have to practice.

Another thing that an intermediary target does is make you less likely to come out of your posture prematurely and look at the ball’s final target (the hole), which causes miss-hit putts. Staying over the ball until the ball has been hit over your spot will improve your ball striking leading to more consistent putts.
I highly recommend checking them all out. The reason why Adam is unique is because he thinks differently than almost any other golf teacher I’ve ever come across. • The stroke: Set-up to the ball. Rotate your head so your eyes track in a straight line to your aiming point and back (not the hole except for straight putts). Make your best stroke. Keep everything still until the putter stops then rotate you head to watch the ball. Hold this position until the ball stops rolling.

The best beginner golf clubs have larger club faces, which makes it easy to hit the the ball and provides more forgiveness for mishits (i.e. when one strikes the ball on the toe or heel of the club). In terms of irons, beginner sets should have a decent offset and a wide sole. This makes it easier to get under the ball and launch it for a higher trajectory.
I like to see the putter relaxed in your hand – it is necessary to control the putter head, as it can weigh as much as half a kilo. It is important to lock the grip in your hands with the soft thumb pad in both hands, and the forefinger on your left – this will help to stop the putter from twisting off line, plus curling the right hand forefinger underneath the shaft (not down).

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the best ways to learn golf. Obviously there is nothing to beat physical practice out on the course with an instructor who has been there and done that, but it is not possible to spend as much time as you might like doing that. Furthermore, a golf pro costs money, which of itself may be a restriction.

Long putters are usually between 46 and 53 inches, but can be more or less for very short or very tall golfers. If you’re 6 feet 2 or taller, use a 54-inch putter, and if you’re 6 feet 1 to 6 feet 2 tall, use a 53-inch putter. Guidelines recommend a 52-inch putter if you’re 6 feet to 6 feet 1 tall and a 51-inch putter if you’re 5 feet 11 to 6 feet tall. If you’re 5 feet 10 to 5 feet 11, use a 50-inch putter and a 49-inch putter if you’re 5 feet 9 to 5 feet 10 tall. A 48-inch putter is a good size if you’re 5 feet 8 to 5 feet 9 tall, and if you’re 5 feet 7 to 5 feet 8 tall, use a 47-inch putter. A golfer who is 5 feet 6 to 5 feet 7 tall should use a 46-inch putter, and if you’re shorter than 5 feet 6, use a 45-inch putter.
What’s great about this drill is that it also involves a point system that allows you to track your progress and level of improvement over time. If you make the putt, give yourself three points. If you put it within the three-foot circle, give yourself one. You can even create your own point system that rewards you for making longer putts, like 40 and 60 footers. Make sure to keep track of you score, so that the next time you use the drill, you will be able to see if you are getting better.
Aim and alignment forms very much a part of the golf set-up above but is so important it deserves a section of its own. In fact the great Jack Nicklaus once said ‘if you’ve mastered the correct aim and alignment you’ve mastered 80% of the game.
One of the most important factors in golf is the ball position. Don’t forget it is the back of the ball that you are stroking with the putter, and not the centre. I always teach that the back of the ball is in the middle of your stance, or slightly forward of this, if you are using a square-to-square stroke.

Balboa Park Municipal Golf Course dates back to 1915 and was designed by famed course architect William P Bell. Located downtown, it is a small course that looks easier than it actually is. In addition to the 18-hole course there is a nine-hole course, a driving range, putting greens and a coffee shop. The planes coming in to land at Lindbergh Field form an impressive backdrop.
5) Rhythm: (20 Minutes) A successful, consistent putting stroke must have rhythm, one that takes into account your inherent sense of tempo and the need to create equal backstroke and forwardstroke lengths. The best way to practice rhythm is to use a metronome. Set it between 54 and 64 beats-per-minute. Experiment until you feel a beat that’s attuned to your personal body rhythm. Next, try to make some practice strokes with the end of the backswing occurring on one click and the end of the forward motion on the next click. Keep and let the rhythm ingrain itself into your system. With practice, the tempo will grow to become a natural part of your swing.

Most golf equipment companies make three styles of putters — standard, belly putter and the long putter. The putter’s length is important; it affects the distance and directional control of the ball, according to Ralph Maltby, golf equipment expert. To help select the correct length, retailers provide sizing guidelines that match your height to a putter length. These are, however, just guidelines and a good place to start. Although your height is a key factor, your stance, posture and anchor point — with belly or long putters — should also be considered.

Then, simply react to the position on the dial. For example, if you see your ball falling into the cup at eight o’clock, focus on that edge of the hole as you settle into your address position, then smoothly let that line guide your stroke. If your mind’s eye sees the putt entering the cup at four o’clock, then focus only on four o’clock.

Once again taking into account the above factors, you should decide what line to throw your putter on and what style of putt to use. Will you be able to hit chains by directing your putter straight at the basket or will wind or obstacles force you to bend your putting line in an arc or s-curve?

Confidence: (10 Minutes) The best putters in the world have the ability to read greens and judge distance correctly. They also have solid alignment routines and fundamentally sound putting mechanics. Their rhythm is flawless and consistent. But these things wouldn’t make them great putters unless they got used to making putts and getting the sensory feedback of seeing and hearing the ball dive into the hole. There’s only one way to get this confidence: Make more putts.

Make Sure Your Goals and Commitment Match: A golf instructor can do wonders with your game, but he can’t do it alone. To make golf lessons worthwhile, you must be able to follow up on them by continuing to work on the instructor’s suggestions on your own time. The higher your goals, the more work will be required. Be realistic in your goals and make sure you can offer the commitment necessary to meet those goals.

Specifically, if you miss your putt, are there hazards like water or downhill drops that will affect your second putt? Maybe you’ll want to aim to one side of the basket so you don’t putt toward a hazard. Perhaps there is a puddle near the basket and your putting grip could be affected by a wet disc.
For most golfers, finding time to practice putting is difficult. In fact, it’s no easy task to find time to improve in any area of the game. Therefore, it’s essential that players not only create practice opportunities whenever they can, but also budget practice time to maximize effectiveness and create better habits.

Golf training products generally fall into 3 categories – books, videos, or physical training aid. Each format has its inherent strengths and weaknesses. Books are generally the least expensive, but obviously can’t demonstrate motion as well as video. Training aids have the ability to interact directly with YOUR swing, but generally they can only address 1 aspect of the swing. Video does a great job showing the motions of the swing and can be comprehensive, but is generally more expensive.

“One putter I remember whose putting was a delight to the eye. He seemed positively to infuse sight and intelligence into his ball. The way that simple sphere would start from his club, mount an incline, negotiate a curve, look for the hole, and endowed with some curious spin, drop unhesitatingly in without dreaming for a moment of rimming it or running over it or stopping short of it, was a sight to make one wise” [source: Haultain].

5. Our last of our golf putting tips is to recognize your actual target.  On lengthier putts, concentrate on the target, which isn’t inevitably the hole.  Your target could be two inches off to the right of the hole, should you anticipate the break of the green being two inches.  At the outset decide on the break, which might be misleading.  Check the overall shape of the green when you come close to it from your fairway.  If the general contour is inclined in the direction of water, as many do for correct water drainage, that will factor into the break in the green that you study the green.  Other factors that could influence break are speed of the greens (faster greens generally will break greater), how the grass lies following cutting, and powerful wind.
No matter whether you’re a weekend warrior or the Golden Bear himself, we all lose power on our golf swing as we age. It’s just a fact of life that we can’t put as much oomph on the ball as we used to. However, while you may not ever get your longest drive back, there
Getting started was simple enough.  I took two videos of my golf swing with my iPhone (down-the-line and face-on) and uploaded them to the website.  I also took the time to describe my swing faults at great length.  Communication is critical between between a student and teacher, probably more so since there’s no face-to-face component involved.  I received a response from my instructor 24 hours later.

After judging the contours of the green and hitting the putt, compare your read to the way the ball actually behaved. For a badly misread putt, stop and take a moment and see what was missed in assessing the slope.A good habit to get into is to align the logo of the ball (or a straight-line marking) along the intended aiming line. This will take the guesswork out of alignment and make it easier to diagnose any mechanics problems.

Now that I have tested them I can confirm that they don’t disappoint. Like the 2015 version, the 2017 upgrade includes all the same clubs (i.e. driver, #3 fairway wood, a hybrid, irons from 5-PW and a putter), but the design and technology of the clubs has been improved. They now have larger sweet spots to their predecessor and the irons have a wider sole.

1) Eyes Have It Drill: Attempt three long putts, a minimum of 50 feet. If you follow the norm, most of your attempts will come up short. Try the same putt, but this time look at your target during the entire motion. Odds are you’ll hit these putts past the hole. The reason is that your eyes have an uncanny way of communicating feel to your body. This is a great drill that leads to a good pre-stroke routine in which you look at the target during your practice motions until you’re confident of your stroke’s power.

The sense of pride and satisfaction on the player’s face is a wonderful moment to witness.

The debate over whether to read putts from behind the hole or behind the ball is a hotly contested one. For me, the correct answer’s a no-brainer: It depends. Different putts demand different perspectives in order for your eyes to accurately assess both distance and slope. Here’s a simple guide:
There’s no question that missing putts is the easiest way to put a bloated number on the scorecard. If you are a new player to golf or are an experienced player that would like to hit the reset button then I would approach your learning the same way I approach the development of almost every player. Start with the shortest stroke first.  This means to start with the putting stroke and move your way back to through the clubs and shots all the way to the driver.
This season’s been good to me: multiple wins, a Solheim Cup victory and the Rolex No. 2 ranking. It’s a story of total game improvement—I’ve been working on everything. Here are five areas where practice paid off. Follow my lead and watch the birdies pile up.

Practising with a short, lofted club encourages better posture and cleaner ball striking. Everybody gains confidence in seeing a nice high ball flight. Too little loft encourages new golfers too use a destructive scooping action to get the ball upwards.

Place three balls in a row along the same line at equal distances.  I suggest 3, 6, and 9 feet to start.  Roll putts starting from the ball closest to the hole and moving outward.  This is a great drill to find rhythm before heading out on the course, or when you’re finishing up your practice for the day.
Grip the putter any way you like, as long as it doesn’t hinder your left hand’s role in the But make sure to grip the club in your fingers. The shaft should run up the lifeline of your left hand for clubface control, but your fingers must contact the grip. You can drop the right forefinger down the shaft, but don’t steer with it. Forget about what your palms are doing. Fingers equal feel.

Are you thinking about taking up golf? Keen to get out on the golf course and start whacking that little white ball? Don’t rush out onto the golf course just yet, you need to consider getting some beginner golf lessons before you get started. Golf unlike a lot of other sports is difficult to master even for the most talented athlete. Whilst your enthusiasm and courage will go a long way to becoming a better golfer, it will only take you so far.
I teach students of all ages and skill levels using the latest technology with proven results.  Sean began playing at the age of 13. He quickly became a student of the swing; reading every golf magazine he could find and watching numerous golf videos. One in particular stood out–Jack Nicklaus’ “Golf My Way”. That video covered all the basics and was a major influence on his success. After attending Methodist College for Professional Golf Management, Sean joined the PGA of America in 1995 and was elected to membership in 2002. During that time he has competed in many local

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Ryan presides as the one of the Callaway Fitting Specialist in the Callaway Performance Center. The CPC, as it is more commonly known, allows guest to be fit utilizing the same cutting edge fitting equipment, which is used on many of today’s stars on the PGA, LPGA, and European Tours.  Ryan’s philosophy is simple and easy to comprehend, he does not teach one method but emphasizes on creating a swing that will provide consistency. Ryan feels that focusing on preparation, progressive learning and having fun, is the key to being successful at golf.  Ryan was first introduced to the game when he was a young kid growing up on Bainbridge Island, WA. His eventual passion for golf earned him a scholarship to play for Eckerd College, located in St. Petersburg, FL. Ryan would go on to earn his Bachelor Degrees in both Business Management and Finance.
If you want to improve your game, golf lessons are a great option. Your instructor will teach you proper techniques. You will learn how to grip a club, how to swing correctly, and what a good stance entails. It is important to correct any errors before they become a habit and you have to relearn how to play. Golf lessons allow you to learn the right way the first time.
We get it. Golf can seem terribly complicated to the uninitiated. So many rules, so many different kinds of clubs. And then there’s the lingo: birdies, bogeys, bump-and-runs. At Golf Digest, this may be the language we speak every day, but we also know it’s a language that can scare prospective golfers off before they ever pick up a club.
Reading and putting this way is similar to how a quarterback completes a pass to a receiver crossing over the middle; he focuses on the receiver, then taps into his instincts to hurl that pigskin far enough ahead of the receiver so he can catch it in full stride.
The final consideration is whether you want to go for new or used clubs. This is generally less relevant for beginners as the club sets for starters are very affordable and therefore we would recommend going with new clubs. But there are times when used clubs offer great value. Either way, remember that you can always trade-in your clubs at the later stage.
If you are just starting to play golf or an experienced player, I recommend you begin with the Grip Lesson. Holding the club properly allows you to take full advantage of the rest of the golf lessons on my website. Once you feel comfortable with the golf grip, you can then choose any of the other lessons.
Does it make a difference? Grab a book or magazine and try reading it while tilting it away from your eyes. It’s impossible. The words are blurry, and images on the page narrow toward a vanishing point, like railroad tracks on a long straightaway (above, right photo).
It’s wonderfully helpful to review each lesson online, to view the recommended drills and to read the notes provided by my Coach, Erin. Since joining GOLFTEC, my handicap index has dropped from 18 to 7; I’m enjoying golf more; and now that I’m retired, I can play several times a week.
