I teach students of all ages and skill levels using the latest technology with proven results.  Sean began playing at the age of 13. He quickly became a student of the swing; reading every golf magazine he could find and watching numerous golf videos. One in particular stood out–Jack Nicklaus’ “Golf My Way”. That video covered all the basics and was a major influence on his success. After attending Methodist College for Professional Golf Management, Sean joined the PGA of America in 1995 and was elected to membership in 2002. During that time he has competed in many local

Maybe Johnny Cash was referring to golf when he sang “I Walk The Line.” Probably not, but Jason Day suggests amateurs should use more than their sense of sight when trying to read longer putts. His tip: Walk the line and get a feel for the pitch of the green.

Many people know what golf is, but have little knowledge about playing the game. A large course, expensive clubs, and advanced techniques may be intimidating to first-time golfers. The only way to move past the fear is to engage with other beginners and learn from experienced players. If you want to get on the course, but have no clue how to start, consider taking golf lessons. The following are five benefits of taking golf lessons as a beginner.
This, in my experience, is one of THE best drills for fixing a golf slice. It helps you develop the correct swing path. You may have seen it before but don’t discount it on that basis – work with it at the range in combination with the drills below and you’ll completely cure your slice…

Beginning at dealer’s left, players take turns drawing single cards from either the stock or discard piles. The drawn card may either be swapped for one of that player’s 6 cards, or discarded. If the card is swapped for one of the face down cards, the card swapped in remains face up. If the card drawn is discarded, the player can then either flip a card or choose to make no move. The round ends when all of a player’s cards are face-up. Remaining players then have one turn to draw a card to improve their hands and then scores are totaled recorded on a running score sheet.

Nowadays drivers come will all sorts of adjustability settings. This can be a little bewildering as a beginner but effectively the adjustability on a driver provides the option to move the weight from the front or back of the club, or left and right (towards the toe and heel). This makes it easier to shape the ball and also give you the player flexibility in setting up the driver to suit your swing.
Finally, every putt is a straight putt and you must strike the ball with a smooth acceleration so that you control the speed of the ball. Many amateurs either hit the ball with a short backswing and a hurried hit, or a long backswing with deceleration, both of which will cause the ball to veer off course.
One tool used by teaching pros to analyze a new golfer’s swing is videotape. Showing the beginner exactly what he is doing wrong can be an effective method in correcting swing faults. The pro can also offer drills to the student for specific purposes. For example, to encourage a complete shoulder turn, the pro may suggest a drill visualizing a vertical line above the ball. When making the backswing, the golfer strive to have his left shoulder pass the line to the right, and have his right shoulder pass the line to the left on the downswing and follow through.

I highly recommend checking them all out. The reason why Adam is unique is because he thinks differently than almost any other golf teacher I’ve ever come across. Comfort and alignment are crucial but the shoulders must be kept square and aligned to the direction of the line on which you want the ball to roll. Try left hand below right, (if you’re a right handed player – and like Jim Furyk or Padraig Harrington); it helps to keep the shoulders square at impact. You may have to adjust to a shorter-shafted putter to get the full value of the stroke.

Nice article. However I must ask how can a golf coach possibly tell you what you are doing wrong without seeing your ball flight? I presume you notified the online golf coach of your bad shot and with that information the coach could link your ball flight with the adequate faults in your swing.
Reading and putting this way is similar to how a quarterback completes a pass to a receiver crossing over the middle; he focuses on the receiver, then taps into his instincts to hurl that pigskin far enough ahead of the receiver so he can catch it in full stride.

So how can you, the novice golfer, move from the awkward early phase to the next level, where you routinely get the ball airborne, finish holes without picking up and hit numerous shots every round that bring you back for more?
Getting started was simple enough.  I took two videos of my golf swing with my iPhone (down-the-line and face-on) and uploaded them to the website.  I also took the time to describe my swing faults at great length.  Communication is critical between between a student and teacher, probably more so since there’s no face-to-face component involved.  I received a response from my instructor 24 hours later.

Furthermore, a golf pro costs money, which of itself may be a restriction.

Wedges are really important clubs in your bag as they are used to get the ball near the pin when you are not far away from the green (i.e. from about 100 yards in). There are many different types of wedges ranging from high 40 degree pitching wedges (PW) to sand wedges (SW) and even 60 degree lob wedges. The high loft in wedges allow one to get under the ball and launch it really high. This makes it easier to stop the ball near the pin and also backspin the ball.

That is, they concentrate on “rolling” (not “hitting”) the ball over a spot about 6 inches in front of the ball. They still see the whole putt and visualize it going in, but they use their spot to get aligned. Spot putting helps you move closer to achieving the 4 pillars of good putting (you need all of them to putt your best).

In terms of golf shafts there are three main considerations: length, flex and material (i.e. graphite vs. steel). In terms of length, standard men’s clubs are generally suitable for males with a height between 5-foot-8-inches and 6-foot-2-inches. If you fall into this range then standard shaft lengths will be just fine. If you are slightly shorter or taller you can probably also get away with standard length clubs, but if you are significantly shorter or taller then you may want to consider custom fitting. Of course, as a beginner you can probably start with standard fitting clubs and then get custom fitted as you get better. The second consideration is staff flex. Flex can range from very “flexy” to stiff. Most clubs are fitted with standard or regular flex shafts, but if you have a very fast swing then you will want to opt for stiff flex. On the other hand if your swing speed is slow then a flexy shaft is better. In general seniors and ladies who can’t generate a fast swing speed should opt for a flexy shit, otherwise I recommend you go with a regular flex to start out. Finally, shafts come in two main material – stainless steel and graphite. Graphite shafts are lighter, which means one can generate more club head speed. Ideally you should go for woods with graphite shafts as with these clubs you are mainly interested in getting as much distance as possible. In terms of irons it is best to stick with steel shafts, although graphite shafts as a beginner isn’t a bad move.
3) Closest-To-The-Hole Contest: With your golf partner, play a putting match in which you get points for being the closest to the hole. Award five points for making a putt and two points for lagging inside the length of your putter. A bonus point is awarded to the ball that’s closest to the hole. For any putt outside the safety zone, deduct one point. Play to an agreed-upon total for your beverage of choice (save the champagne for the winning putt at the Club Championship)!

Tucked away amongst the rolling hills of northern San Diego, the Maderas Golf Course has an unusual setting in that it passes between cliffs and rocky outcroppings, along with forestland and creeks. Pro instructors are on hand for all skills levels.
• Make several rehearsal strokes prior to each putt trying to feel the energy needed. An example is to place three balls on the same line at 20, 25 and 30 feet from the hole. Take your time and try to make each putt, then repeat the process from different directions and lengths for uphill, downhill and level putts.
If you’re 6 feet or taller, use a 34 1/2-inch putter, and if you’re 5 feet 10 inches to 5 feet 11 tall, use a 34-inch putter. Golfers who are 5 feet 9 to 5 feet 10 should use a 33 1/2-inch putter and a 33-inch putter if you’re 5 feet 5 to 5 feet 8 tall. If you’re 5 feet 3 to 5 feet 4 tall, a 32 1/2-inch putter is the correct size and a 32-inch putter fits a golfer who is 5 feet 1 to 5 feet 2. Guidelines recommend a 31 1/2-inch putter if you’re 4 feet 11 to 5 feet tall, and a 31-inch putter should be used by golfers shorter than 4 feet 11.
As anyone who plays golf regularly will know, putting is a game within a game. You can strike the ball well all day, mastering the seemingly harder side of the game but if you consistently three putt, you’ll walk off disappointed. But how much time should you pay to your putting technique, and how much to feel. The answer to that question is that both are important but here I’ll focus on the putting tips that will groove amre consistent stroke.
Another of the 4 pillars of good putting is fluidity (making a tension-free stroke), which spot putting helps us with. The more focused you are on the spot and the line (visualizing the putt), the less you’re focused on your putting stroke. You become more “connected” with the putt. Putting needs to be as fluid as possible – any focus on what your body is doing will affect that fluidity (same as the full swing).

Be realistic in your goals and make sure you can offer the commitment necessary to meet those goals.

The key to distance control is to roll the ball, not hit it. To do this, take an open stance, your weight slightly favoring your left side and your putter shaft leaning toward the target. The open stance makes it easier to feel the left hand going out and down the target line. The forward lean offsets the 4 degrees of loft I recommend for a putter and helps the ball roll smoothly.

If you’ve got a 50-footer and you try to get it in a three-foot circle around the hole, you miss by three feet and you’ve got six feet left. But if you try and make it from 50 feet and you miss by three, you’ve only got three feet left. It sounds simple, but that’s sort of the idea for putting.
We are asked this question every day, and the answer really depends on your individual goals. Typically we recommend taking at least six golf lessons to be able to work through a game plan with your coach to start to reach your golf lesson goals, but it depends on the student. Our coaches are excellent at putting together a lesson plan that matches your specific needs. However, our golf lesson packages follow a basic outline that will give you a little bit more clarity on what to expect in general.

The Internet is awash in golf instruction, much more than any sane person can digest. This has got to be tough on the golf magazines. They are the biggest traditional purveyors of golf tips, after teaching pros and that well-meaning guy at your club you try never to be paired with. But these days there are so many tips, lessons and swing analyses available online—most of them free, in high-def and searchable by topic—that waiting for a handful printed on paper to arrive in your mailbox each month seems quaint. Likewise buying an…
Having previously worked on grip and ball positions, it is as important to get your stance correct. Your feet should feel comfortably apart, never too narrow, and your weight should be biased towards your toes – not as most people tend to address the ball with the weight on their heels.

Although there are many great golf instructors in the United States, who are PGA Class A Professionals, not all great instructors carry this status nor find it a major determiner of golf instruction proficiency.
Thanks Tom! Appreciate you reading. Alignment is without a doubt the biggest cause of missed putts vs poor technique, yet so many amateurs don’t want to practice it. For me it’s worth getting this right on the practice green and making the spot technique a habit. If all the best players in the world do it, it says something! I also wrote about dominance and why this is important in finding the spot in my latest article.

To groove a consistent putting strike, built two gates using tees, as shown. Make the first gate just wider than the putter head, the second just wider than the ball and practise swinging the putter through the first gate to hit the ball through the second. Only with a pure strike will you achieve this.

The head size of your golf clubs is important, particularly when choosing woods. Generally the larger the head size the larger the sweet spot. Therefore clubs which are oversized are generally very good for beginners as they are much more forgiving than small or mid head sized clubs. That being said, you don’t want the head size of our clubs to be too big, as this can make it difficult to control the ball. For example, senior golfers who generally don’t generate a lot of club head speed would benefit from oversized heads, whereas a beginner who still have many years under his belt would want to go for a mid to large head size. In practical terms we recommend drivers with a head sized of 450 to 460 cc. Irons should have a larger face and a deeper cavity at the back of the club. If you look at the head of irons used by top players you will notice four things: 1. the sole of the club is relatively narrow, as a beginner you want a wider sole. 2. The face of the club is relatively small with a tight sweet spot, as a starter golfer you want a larger face with a wider sweet spot to cater for mishits. 3. The cavity at the back of the club is usually very shallow, with some irons being total blades (see cast vs forged irons below), as a beginner you want a deeper cavity to disperse the weight to the perimeter of the club. And 4. Better players use irons with very little offset of the club head from the shaft, as a intermediate or beginner you want a good amount of offset to make it easier to launch the ball off the ground.
So its back to working on my posture, takeaway and backswing in my living room.  If it seems like I’m learning how to swing a golf club again, it’s probably because I’ve never been properly taught how to in the first place, in spite of all that time I clocked in beating balls with a golf pro hovering nearby.  In retrospect, the only thing I managed to get good get at was launching scuffed up balls into a far-off net.
I think most beginner golfers are concerned most about not embarrassing themselves – which is why they focus on improving their drives and iron play. But as soon as you feel reasonably competent with your full golf swing, I encourage you to spend as much time as possible on your short game.

Golfing great Ben Hogan once described putting as “merely rolling the ball over the surface of the green by striking it with a gentle but firm blow” [source: Hogan]. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Of course, if it were easy, a lot more of us would be raking in big bucks on the PGA tour. It’s cool to be able to step up to the tee and blast the ball down the fairway, but let’s face it, putting is what separates truly great golfers from good ones. That’s because putting is one of the trickiest skills of any sport — a delicate mixture of muscle control and mental focus. When a skilled putter scrutinizes a 10-foot (3-meter) distance to the cup, pauses and then applies precisely the right amount of force to sink the shot, that triumph of mind over matter is a truly inspiring sight to behold.
What I’m learning now, in addition to swinging a club correctly, is to hold myself more accountable for my golf game.  Taking online golf lessons is akin to walking a tightrope without a safety net.  There’s nobody around to observe your every swing and make corrections.  In truth, this is more indicative of how golf is actually played – on your own, with nothing but the space between your ears to guide you.  In an interview with pgatour.com, Sean Foley was asked if he envisioned a time when Tiger Woods wouldn’t need a coach.
I have already talked about the importance of engaging the bigger muscles to control the swing. If you can do this then all you need to do to hit the ball further is make a slightly bigger swing, master it and you’ll be far better at lag putting.
The reason this section is titled “Golf Tips for Beginners” is because if a new player to the game took their time and learned these sound fundamentals it would make learning a sound swing much easier. I once had a former professional hockey player, who had never played golf before come for a lesson. He understood the value of the basics. We spent an entire hour working only on his grip stance and posture. It would be great if all new players were as patient as him.
However, how do you know which are the best golf clubs for you? There are golf clubs with steel shafts and golf clubs with graphite shafts (much more expensive, but lighter in weight). There are big headed golf clubs, cavity back golf clubs, and many more.
I have been teaching golf in Atlanta for 15 years and I have worked with every golf level from beginners to Tour Players. In every golf lesson, I use high-speed video with reference lines that help me and the student see the areas that might need improving to help their game.  I also use a technology called Boditrak.  This technology allows me to see how the golfer is using the ground in their swing for maximum transfer power.  In the first lesson, you will see the route that we will take to make your golf swing more consistent and you will see results in the first lesso

It’s a simple fact: if you can put the ball in the fairway consistently, you give yourself a great chance at par or better. Conversely, miss the fairway on a regular basis and you give yourself a headache.

Tossing the putter with as little spin as possible by flicking with supporting fingers and snapping at the hips. Less spin helps to keep the putter flight pure and on a straight line as well as reduce chain spit-outs and less wrist movement helps with consistency. Doesn’t feel as natural and is more difficult to putt from long distances.
If you stare at the ball too long at address, it’s easy to get brain-locked and hit a bad putt. To avoid this, I don’t even look at the ball. Try looking at a spot just in front of the ball on your target line and rolling the ball over that spot. Put a tee in the ground in front of the ball when you practice (right). This gets you thinking about the target line instead of the stroke–the opposite of what most golfers do.

As I have already covered in the section on drivers above, the best drivers have a large head size. Ranging from 440-460cc. I recommend you look for a driver with a head size greater than 440 cc. This will maximize the sweet spot and provide loads of forgiveness on mishits.
The top half of your body should be towards a horizontal position, ie your shoulders, neck and back of your head. If you are standing too upright, there is a tendency to direct the weight of your body towards your heels. You should be looking straight down over the ball and through the centre of your eye and not out of the lower part of the eye.

Online golf instruction can be a murky world. I firmly believe there is no right way to swing a golf club, but there are literally thousands of instructors who all have their version of the golf swing. They have all created videos, articles, and other kinds of resources to teach you their interpretation of the golf swing.
Beginner Lessons get you playing right away – not just hours and hours of hitting buckets of balls – it’s all about having fun.  Getting out on the course, getting comfortable with your equipment, and building your skills as you go along makes learning the game fun.
Rather than letting golfers just starting out swing and swing to eventually develop a comfortable swing that sends the ball straight, we recommend starting with beginner golf swing plane training. To help train new golfers to follow the swing plane, PGA Professional Ali Jean Wells demonstrates a simple three-step beginner golf swing drill that warms golfers progressively into a natural swing that’s on plane.

This creates a pure horizontal directly above your eyes, and it also eliminates a lot of the visual “background noise” that can interfere and confuse your reads.

Every great golf swing rotates around the body in what is known as the golf swing plane. This movement gives the golf club the best chance of returning the golf club to the exact position required to make solid contact with the golf ball.
Are you thinking about taking up golf? Keen to get out on the golf course and start whacking that little white ball? Don’t rush out onto the golf course just yet, you need to consider getting some beginner golf lessons before you get started. Golf unlike a lot of other sports is difficult to master even for the most talented athlete. Whilst your enthusiasm and courage will go a long way to becoming a better golfer, it will only take you so far.
For example, on a left-to-righter, the natural tendency is to lean with the slope as you settle into your address position, toward your toes, until your eyes are level with the tilt of the green. You do it without even thinking. But that makes your eyes shift outside the ball, causing you to aim left of your chosen line. The opposite happens on right-to-left putts; you lean toward your heels, shifting your eyes inside the ball, and you aim too far to the right. Hey, it’s just our natural design, but it’s a huge putting problem, compounded by the fact that your shoes feature heel wedges that slope as much as two degrees—an added tilt that further distorts your feel for break at address.

2. Check out the diagram below (courtesy of Aimpoint Golf) and you’ll see that the putt needs to start on a line that (if hit straight) would take it outside the apex of the putt. Hold your putter (vertically) out at arms-length and close one eye. If you’re right handed, this would be holding the putter with the grip in your left hand and closing your left eye and find the line that the putt would need to start on (in the first 2-3 ft so that the ball rolls over the apex.
The putting stroke can sometimes only be about six inches long. You don’t have much time to adjust. In the full swing you have more time for adjustment. When you’re putting from three to five feet, your putting stroke is so short, you just have no time for adjustments. need to have the proper set-up with the putter face aimed where you want the ball to go and that’s 90 per cent of it.

“step by step instructions on how to play golf -“

Before you start bombing them down the fairway, there are some fundamental golf tips that all beginner golfers should know. This section of How To Play Golf beginner golf tips and lessons, lays out the basics from the initial correct addressing of the golf ball all the way to the final follow through.
One of the most important factors in golf is the ball position. Don’t forget it is the back of the ball that you are stroking with the putter, and not the centre. I always teach that the back of the ball is in the middle of your stance, or slightly forward of this, if you are using a square-to-square stroke.
Over the past 22 years, our Director of Instruction has developed a unique approach to teaching and learning golf that is based on finding each individual student’s best way of playing the game. Whether you’re a beginner or tour player, your experience will be fun and productive.
Andy begins by pointing out that the object is to hit the ball in a reasonably straight line, but that a lot of beginners think that in that case the swing should be directly behind the ball and follow through in a straight line. However, that is not the case. The club does not travel in a straight line, but in an arc. The club is raised behind the golfer’s body so it is not directly behind the ball. As the swing commences it travels down the first part of the arc and – it is to be hoped – connects with the ball at exactly the point where it will send it in the direction we want, and then continues in its arc finishing up above the golfer’s left shoulder (or right, in the case of a left-handed player).

I think my service stands out because unlike a typical Swing Coach, I think the most important aspect of teaching the golf swing is communication and ensuring that the player understands why I am making the changes/suggestions that I am making during the lesson.  Additionally, I am a former Division 1 Collegiate golfer, and have been a serious competitive golfer for the majority of my life and continue down that path today.

Ali shows you how to use two clubs to further develop a proper swing plane, being sure to keep the clubs parallel and never let them touch.

When making the backswing, the golfer can strive to have his left shoulder pass the line to the right, and have his right shoulder pass the line to the left on the downswing and follow through.
Find a flat spot on the practice green and stick a tee 2-3 away from the cup.  Line up that short straight putt and knock it in.  Then do it 99 more times.  During this drill make sure you’re focusing on form and alignment.  Not only is this a great drill to work on technique, but seeing the 100 putts drop in a row will give you the confidence to make more putts during your round.
After this, he suggests that you should always warm up before playing golf, even if it is only on the practice range. Although golf is not as physical an activity as some sports, you use a considerable number of muscles so a regular warm up routine is essential. Five or ten minutes of stretching can help to avoid pulled muscles, or even more serious injuries.

Once you have positioned yourself properly in front of the ball during the setup the next part involves actually hitting the ball. While the golf swing is certainly complex in itself, it can be broken down into swing sequences that you should strive to master. They are: takeaway, backswing, top of the swing, downswing, impact, extension & rotation, and the follow through.

Do me a favor and sign your name on a piece of paper. See how quick and easy that was? Now try to slowly duplicate that signature. Not so easy. The reason is, you’re thinking about it and not tapping into your subconscious, the way you did when you signed the first time. Putting is no different. The best putters see their target line and then roll the ball on that line, just like you saw the paper and then signed it. The lesson is, keep it natural, and don’t let yourself get bogged down by anything.

Confidence: (10 Minutes) The best putters in the world have the ability to read greens and judge distance correctly. They also have solid alignment routines and fundamentally sound putting mechanics. Their rhythm is flawless and consistent. But these things wouldn’t make them great putters unless they got used to making putts and getting the sensory feedback of seeing and hearing the ball dive into the hole. There’s only one way to get this confidence: Make more putts.
You’ll achieve a much more consistent “roll” on the ball, which is the most important factor in good putting. Not “trying” to make putts, but instead hitting a solid putt to an intermediary target will make you a much better putter.

5. Our last of our golf putting tips is to recognize your actual target.  On lengthier putts, concentrate on the target, which isn’t inevitably the hole.  Your target could be two inches off to the right of the hole, should you anticipate the break of the green being two inches.  At the outset decide on the break, which might be misleading.  Check the overall shape of the green when you come close to it from your fairway.  If the general contour is inclined in the direction of water, as many do for correct water drainage, that will factor into the break in the green that you study the green.  Other factors that could influence break are speed of the greens (faster greens generally will break greater), how the grass lies following cutting, and powerful wind.
In addition to these basic details, Lessons.com also provides information about each golf instructor’s certifications and experience. Read through each golf pro’s profile to help you build an impression of what he or she is like as a teacher. Profiles also indicate whether the instruction offered will match what you need in a golf lesson. Some instructors have prior experience working for golf academies, which demonstrates they have considerable knowledge and skill helping others improve their performance on the freeway.
