By the way, since this is my first GolfWRX Article allow me to introduce myself. My name is Brian Oswald, and I’m the founder of golfrules.com (The Oswald Academy), which has only one purpose: To teach in the Rules of Golf in a (hopefully!) fun and entertaining way. I publish Rules books and Rules videos, answer questions and hold seminars arounds the world. I also have a Rules newsletter, among other things.
For the best golf lessons in the Philadelphia area, schedule a lesson with a professional at Golf Galaxy. Your pro will use the latest technology to analyze problem areas in your swing and get you on your way to lower scores.
As I have already covered in the section on drivers above, the best drivers have a large head size. Ranging from 440-460cc. I recommend you look for a driver with a head size greater than 440 cc. This will maximize the sweet spot and provide loads of forgiveness on mishits.
In your quest to master every sequence of the golf swing you will find that some areas give you more trouble than others. Golf drills give you practicing tips that will help you solve and master any specific part of the swing.
It’s a simple fact: if you can put the ball in the fairway consistently, you give yourself a great chance at par or better. Conversely, miss the fairway on a regular basis and you give yourself a headache.
To improve your swing, you must know why the ball does what it does in flight. That way you at least know what really caused the errant shot and perhaps can make the correct fix. You must understand the simple Ball Flight Laws.
The easiest way to stop your lower body moving during your putting stroke is to make yourself knock-kneed. This will automatically put your weight onto the inside of the sole of your shoes. Now, if you make a stroke you will see that the lower body, legs and knees stay still. Try putting a toilet roll between your knees and practice your stroke. Positive stroke isn’t it? And no lower movement!
Another of the 4 pillars of good putting is fluidity (making a tension-free stroke), which spot putting helps us with. The more focused you are on the spot and the line (visualizing the putt), the less you’re focused on your putting stroke. You become more “connected” with the putt. Putting needs to be as fluid as possible – any focus on what your body is doing will affect that fluidity (same as the full swing).
• The stroke: Set-up to the ball. Rotate your head so your eyes track in a straight line to your aiming point and back (not the hole except for straight putts). Make your best stroke. Keep everything still until the putter stops then rotate you head to watch the ball. Hold this position until the ball stops rolling.

This, in my experience, is one of THE best drills for fixing a golf slice. It helps you develop the correct swing path. You may have seen it before but don’t discount it on that basis – work with it at the range in combination with the drills below and you’ll completely cure your slice…
Next Piers shows you the stance with his feet apart at about shoulder width, and the ball slightly ahead of the centre of his body. The feet are turned slightly outwards. He then describes how to aim the body and achieve the target line.

No, Henrik Stenson isn’t playing peekaboo above. Many Tour players use their hands and cap to see a putt’s true slope; it helps give them a clear, clutter-free view of the line. For best results, drop the brim of your cap or your fingers to the back edge of the cup, to block your view of the green beyond the hole. Ignore anything past the cup. Often, the green’s apron or the lips of nearby bunkers will tilt in a different direction than the ground you stand on. Don’t let this “noise” distract you from your read.

Ask any good putter what separates him or her from the crowd, and they’ll most likely say, “My ability to bury the short ones, inside three feet, almost all the time.” Sure, crazy lipouts or spike marks happen, but if you really want to shave strokes off your card and be a master of the Read more…
2. Check out the diagram below (courtesy of Aimpoint Golf) and you’ll see that the putt needs to start on a line that (if hit straight) would take it outside the apex of the putt. Hold your putter (vertically) out at arms-length and close one eye. If you’re right handed, this would be holding the putter with the grip in your left hand and closing your left eye and find the line that the putt would need to start on (in the first 2-3 ft so that the ball rolls over the apex.
I highly recommend checking them all out. The reason why Adam is unique is because he thinks differently than almost any other golf teacher I’ve ever come across. He’s not here to tell you how to get your hands in a certain position, but rather to challenge you to figure it out on your own through performance games, changing your mindset, and experimentation.
If you’ve got a 50-footer and you try to get it in a three-foot circle around the hole, you miss by three feet and you’ve got six feet left. But if you try and make it from 50 feet and you miss by three, you’ve only got three feet left. It sounds simple, but that’s sort of the idea for putting.
Rather than letting golfers just starting out swing and swing to eventually develop a comfortable swing that sends the ball straight, we recommend starting with beginner golf swing plane training. To help train new golfers to follow the swing plane, PGA Professional Ali Jean Wells demonstrates a simple three-step beginner golf swing drill that warms golfers progressively into a natural swing that’s on plane.
It takes a long time to become proficient at golf, but the rewards are great. Learn the basics from a PGA professional, practice what you learn and then find some golfing buddies and go to the course and play. Ask your pro to make sure your clubs have the features that are designed to help out a beginning golfer.
The first thing she wanted to address was my hunched over posture.  To illustrate her point, she positioned my swing adjacent with that of Rory McIlroy’s.  There was something humbling about seeing my swing in contrast to Rory’s and even my instructor sheepishly noted that it wasn’t her intention to “compare” my swing with the world’s No. 1 golfer.  Rory, of course, has model posture at setup.  He also has a neutral takeaway; mine is to the inside.  My instructor filmed a nine-minute segment picking apart my swing, explaining how posture and takeaway influence the chain of events that follow.  Her analysis concluded with a pair of additional videos that described corrections that I could incorporate into my swing.
Establishing an identical pre-shot routine is essential. Check the line (ideally while others are putting out but not in their eye-line), address slightly away from the ball, check your alignment, practice swing to get the feel of the pace, shuffle forward to the ball. One look then pull the trigger, smoothly back and through.

We get it. Golf can seem terribly complicated to the uninitiated. So many rules, so many different kinds of clubs. And then there’s the lingo: birdies, bogeys, bump-and-runs. At Golf Digest, this may be the language we speak every day, but we also know it’s a language that can scare prospective golfers off before they ever pick up a club.

Nextt aren’t the most well known brand in golf, but their complete beginner sets are rather good. I tested their Z1 Complete 17-Piece Set and was super impressed with it’s performance. The forgiveness from this set is seriously good, and out of all the brands I tested, I thought Nextt provided the most convincing offer that could be used by the widest range of handicaps – from beginner to intermediate.

Making the Choice: After these steps, you should be ready to make your choice. It’s important that you choose an instructor whose personality meshes with yours. Going to a teacher you don’t like will keep you from learning. It’s important that an instructor’s goals match yours, and that your commitment matches your goals. Once you’ve made your choice, throw yourself into it – and watch your scores improve.
One key to making more putts is to eliminate as much excess movement in your putting stroke as you can. PGA Professional Matt Hilton has a simple drill to help you do that – and it doesn’t even involve your putter.

Reading and putting this way is similar to how a quarterback completes a pass to a receiver crossing over the middle; he focuses on the receiver, then taps into his instincts to hurl that pigskin far enough ahead of the receiver so he can catch it in full stride.
Disc golf putting tips can be broken down into a few main categories, and doing so will help you strategize and practice your routine efficiently.  If you’ve already established your putting style and have selected your putter, feel free to skip to the next section.
In terms of golf shafts there are three main considerations: length, flex and material (i.e. graphite vs. steel). In terms of length, standard men’s clubs are generally suitable for males with a height between 5-foot-8-inches and 6-foot-2-inches. If you fall into this range then standard shaft lengths will be just fine. If you are slightly shorter or taller you can probably also get away with standard length clubs, but if you are significantly shorter or taller then you may want to consider custom fitting. Of course, as a beginner you can probably start with standard fitting clubs and then get custom fitted as you get better. The second consideration is staff flex. Flex can range from very “flexy” to stiff. Most clubs are fitted with standard or regular flex shafts, but if you have a very fast swing then you will want to opt for stiff flex. On the other hand if your swing speed is slow then a flexy shaft is better. In general seniors and ladies who can’t generate a fast swing speed should opt for a flexy shit, otherwise I recommend you go with a regular flex to start out. Finally, shafts come in two main material – stainless steel and graphite. Graphite shafts are lighter, which means one can generate more club head speed. Ideally you should go for woods with graphite shafts as with these clubs you are mainly interested in getting as much distance as possible. In terms of irons it is best to stick with steel shafts, although graphite shafts as a beginner isn’t a bad move.

One common problem with disc golf putting advice is that it is often vague and lacks focus. Many articles providing disc golf putting tips just list out a load to advice, half of which isn’t even helpful. That’s not the best way to approach putting technique. To help, we’ve structured our disc golf putting advice from start to finish.  We’ll also keep adding more putting tips to this article over time so this page is never outdated.
This class is geared around improving on the fundamentals. The smaller class size allows for greater one-on-one time with the professional for more personal instruction, and will cover a wider variety of topics than the Beginner class, including uneven lies, shot shaping, and recovery shots. We recommend beginning golfers take the GGR I class first.

With the help of my sons, Ron and Dave Jr., I’ve developed a philosophy that focuses on this notion but also incorporates basic tips for improving your setup and stroke–the same tips I’ve given major champions like Phil Mickelson and Yani Tseng. Our method might really differ from what you do now, but it’s the most effective way to roll the ball into the hole.

The ability for golfers to self-diagnose and to fix their swings when shots start flying into neighboring fairways is the end game we all continually strive for.  Golf instruction, whether it takes the form of a one-on-one lesson or is given online with the help of video, is at the end of the day, just a tool to help us teach ourselves.  Learning how to do something well takes time, dedication and focused practice, concepts that are as old as dirt and are the hallmarks of all great golfers, as well as those of us who are aspiring to be great.  With all that being said, it’s time that I got back to digging.
This section covers the fundamentals of the golf game. Golf tips on the setup and its various elements, the swing itself and its various sequences, as well as golf drills for every part of the swing are all provided.

The 12 golf lesson package is for people who are serious about learning the game, or advanced players looking to get into the nuances of the golf swing to shave important strokes off of their score. It builds on everything you learned in the previous lessons, but in greater detail. Each golf lesson is broken down into a very specific area to maximize improvement. Entire lessons will be spent on short/mid irons, long irons, fairway woods/drivers, short game and putting.
In this video I detail the grip, set up and basic stroke mechanics as well as share a simple drill that will help you to build a strong foundation. Through implementing these suggestions along with a little hard work, you can improve your putting and thus lower your scores.
I can identify with new golfer and higher handicap golfers. I am  able to give my students all of the beginning and intermediate skills at a reasonable rate. I will make putting, chipping and pitching easy for any of my students.  I started teaching golf to high school students in 1985 and have constantly built on my skills.
Meadowbrook is another golf course situated close to downtown. The park was established in 1924 and it’s the oldest in the area. There are 9 hole courses and the narrow fairways can get really exciting to try. There is a rental service to provide you with your golf cart. For newbie’s, you don’t need to bring your equipment.
New golfers can start out by taking group lessons at first. Group lessons are less expensive than private lessons, and beginners can learn the basic grip, setup and swing in a group setting. Some people find it comfortable and motivating to learn with others of a similar level. As an added bonus, group lessons can introduce you to other golfers who might become your golfing partners when you are ready to try out your newly learned golf skills on the course.
Recreational golfers are constantly seeking tips on how to improve, and the major golf publications such as Golf Magazine and Golf Digest devote substantial portions of their pages to instructional material of various kinds, often written by top-level instructors. Even television broadcasts of professional golf tournaments often contain short instructional segments, delivered by commentators who are also instructors such as Peter Kostis.

Like the Callaway set, the ProStaff irons range from a 6-SW with a hybrid and woods making up for the missing lower irons. I was very impressed with the irons. They have a deep center of gravity, which makes it a lot easier to get the ball of the ground and reduces spin on the ball. This is important as high spin rates mean lots of inconsistency.
Most players should spend the majority of their time on the shorter putts (ten feet and in), but that doesn’t mean they should disregard the long putts. Putts from 20 feet and beyond create major problems for many players. These lengthy attempts often result in three or even four-putts that can kill someone’s score and ruin their confidence. That’s why the goal with this drill, besides trying to actually drain the putt, is to put the ball within a three-foot range for a makeable two-putt. If you can consistently two-putt from 20 feet and further, while occasionally making one, you will be able to shave several strokes off your score right away.
Wedges are really important clubs in your bag as they are used to get the ball near the pin when you are not far away from the green (i.e. from about 100 yards in). There are many different types of wedges ranging from high 40 degree pitching wedges (PW) to sand wedges (SW) and even 60 degree lob wedges. The high loft in wedges allow one to get under the ball and launch it really high. This makes it easier to stop the ball near the pin and also backspin the ball.

Step 4: Walk behind the ball, and repeat your horizontal scan from coin to coin for the first half of the putt. You now have a complete picture of slope. For best results, drop actual coins on the green when you practice. After a while, your reads will be absolute money.

A putter is a really personal thing in golf, so there really isn’t a recommended option. The main thing to look for in your putter is comfort and feel. I recommend you take some time to many putters to see which leave the biggest impression on you.
If you stare at the ball too long at address, it’s easy to get brain-locked and hit a bad putt. To avoid this, I don’t even look at the ball. Try looking at a spot just in front of the ball on your target line and rolling the ball over that spot. Put a tee in the ground in front of the ball when you practice (right). This gets you thinking about the target line instead of the stroke–the opposite of what most golfers do.

Why do professional golfers wind up with far fewer three putts than amateurs? Hours and hours of practice, for one thing. But it’s also due to better putting fundamentals, particularly being able to consistently repeat the same motion.

That’s number one in my book. From there then you can build confidence because your putter face is aiming where you want the ball to go. A lot of amateur mistakes can get fixed if they just have a square putter face and a balanced position at address. With Trackman, 80% of where the ball is going to start begins with where the face is aimed. In putting, it’s probably 99, 98%. So if you can aim the straight where you want then you can read the greens better because your putts are going to start on the correct line. You might read it left edge, but you have your putter face aimed right edge then the ball starts on the right edge and breaks, then you think ‘man, I can’t read greens’ and then I say ‘no, you weren’t aiming it where you wanted to aim it!’
Tossing the putter with as little spin as possible by flicking with supporting fingers and snapping at the hips. Less spin helps to keep the putter flight pure and on a straight line as well as reduce chain spit-outs and less wrist movement helps with consistency. Doesn’t feel as natural and is more difficult to putt from long distances.

I think my service stands out because unlike a typical Swing Coach, I think the most important aspect of teaching the golf swing is communication and ensuring that the player understands why I am making the changes/suggestions that I am making during the lesson.  Additionally, I am a former Division 1 Collegiate golfer, and have been a serious competitive golfer for the majority of my life and continue down that path today.

If you shot a free throw with your right hand only, you’d realize you need your left hand as a guide. The same is true on the greens: The left hand is the direction hand, and it’s just as important as the right. Practice putting left-hand-only (right), or have someone hold a club in front of your hands on the target line. Bump the grip with the back of your hand, not your fingers, like Dave Jr. is doing.
One common problem with disc golf putting advice is that it is often vague and lacks focus. Many articles providing disc golf tips just list out a load to advice, half of which isn’t even helpful. That’s not the best way to approach putting technique. To help, we’ve structured our disc golf putting advice from start to finish.  We’ll also keep adding more putting tips to this article over time so this page is never outdated.
If the golf club gets a little under or above the plane line as it approaches impact – without being excessive – that is acceptable, writes instructor Andrew Rice. But if you are under the plane line approaching impact, you will be hitting pushes and hooks; too far above the line and you will be hitting pulls and slices.
The top half of your body should be towards a horizontal position, ie your shoulders, neck and back of your head. If you are standing too upright, there is a tendency to direct the weight of your body towards your heels. You should be looking straight down over the ball and through the centre of your eye and not out of the lower part of the eye.

Choose a putting style first, then you can test putters based on what you need for that style. Most disc golfers have one primary putting style and then use one or two backup styles in case of odd situation. Here are the main putting styles and a brief intro to get you started.

For beginners, in lessons 4, 5 and 6, you will also start working on short game and putting. Don’t let yourself think this isn’t as much fun as whacking balls on the driving range, this is BY FAR the most important aspect of golf. That’s why they say “Drive for show, putt for dough!”
Next up is a description of the body motion during the swing. Piers shows you how to practise this without a golf club. You put your arms around your front and “hug” yourself. Then you place the feet into the correct position as described earlier and “wind up” the body keeping the lower body stable. You then move your body towards the target and turn your body. The weight is now all on your lead leg and the other foot just has the toes in contact with the ground, the spikes of your shoes pointing away behind you. The right knee is “on top” of the left knee.

The problem is that when most golfers practice, they want to go out and bang as many range balls with their driver as they can before a round. If they simply spent some of that time on the practice green, they would quickly see improved scores. The green seems to be the mortal enemy for many golfers, and it doesn’t have to be.  Here are three great putting drills to add to your arsenal that will help you become a better putter and consequently, a better golfer.
Mr. Nicklaus and Mr. Grout knew full well the importance of the basics. Even during his season he would, after three to four tournaments, go back and spend a full day of practice reviewing his grip, stance, posture and alignment.

Some top instructors who work with professional golfers have become quite well known in their own right over the years, including Harvey Penick, Jack Grout, Dick Harmon, David Leadbetter, Butch Harmon, Hank Haney, Chip Thomson, Sean Foley, Quentin Patterson and Mike Bennett and Andy Plummer. Some of the teachers maintain teaching facilities or schools where they or their disciples use their methods or systems. A few instructors focus solely on a particular aspect of the sport, such as Dave Pelz with the short game. Some famous golfers have been tightly bound with their instructor, such as Jack Nicklaus with Jack Grout, while in other cases golfers have made high-profile switches from one instructor to another, such as Tiger Woods moving from Butch Harmon to various other instructors.
Throwing the disc overhand while supporting with thumb underneath the middle of the flight plate and fingers along the rim, almost like throwing a football or darts. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the best ways to learn golf. Obviously there is nothing to beat physical practice out on the course with an instructor who has been there and done that, but it is not possible to spend as much time as you might like doing that. Furthermore, a golf pro costs money, which of itself may be a restriction.

I particularly like the Strata set as the drivers are very good. Callaway are known for their drivers and with the Strata set they don’t disappoint. The Driver, 3W and 5W are all made from titanium and have huge sweet spots – it is seriously difficult to mishit them.

Now you have gripped the putter correctly, it is important to realise that the length of the shaft is the predominant factor in getting your eyes directly over the ball, as this is important for getting a consistence in reading the putting line from ball to hole, or target point. This line is always the same, whether 3 ft or 30 ft long.
You can build your swing around these elements by following the videos below. They break the golf swing down into different stages and then give you a series of checkpoints for you to work on at home.

Golfing great Ben Hogan once described putting as “merely rolling the ball over the surface of the green by striking it with a gentle but firm blow” [source: Hogan]. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Of course, if it were easy, a lot more of us would be raking in big bucks on the PGA tour. It’s cool to be able to step up to the tee and blast the ball down the fairway, but let’s face it, putting is what separates truly great golfers from good ones. That’s because putting is one of the trickiest skills of any sport — a delicate mixture of muscle control and mental focus. When a skilled putter scrutinizes a 10-foot (3-meter) distance to the cup, pauses and then applies precisely the right amount of force to sink the shot, that triumph of mind over matter is a truly inspiring sight to behold.
The 18-piece set includes a set of irons (6-SW), titanium drivers (1W, 3W, 5W), which have an extra large sweet spot, 2 hybrids and a putter. That’s where this online beginner’s guide comes in. To those who know nothing about golf, our goal is to shepherd you through this uncertainty. What kind of clubs do you need? How do you practice? When do you know that you’re ready for the golf course? The way we see it, the only dumb questions about getting started in golf are the ones you’re afraid to ask, or worse, the ones for which you can’t find an answer. The whole point of this guide is to make sure that last part is no longer a problem. — Sam Weinman
To improve your swing, you must know why the ball does what it does in flight. That way you at least know what really caused the errant shot and perhaps can make the correct fix. You must understand the simple Ball Flight Laws.
The clock drill is one of the best ways to improve your consistency on 3-8 foot putts.  It’s been claimed that Phil Mickelson completes this drill (along with similar chipping drills) at least once during every one of his practice session.   You’re guaranteed to have these putts throughout your round and seeing them drop can make all the difference.
Step 4: Walk behind the ball, and repeat your horizontal scan from coin to coin for the first half of the putt. You now have a complete picture of slope. For best results, drop actual coins on the green when you practice. After a while, your reads will be absolute money.

If you aren’t able to locate a horizontal standard, use the brim of your cap or visor. Better yet, curl your hands around your face, with your fingers above your eyebrows and your palms blocking out your peripheral vision. This creates a pure horizontal directly above your eyes, and it also eliminates a lot of the visual “background noise” that can interfere and confuse your reads.

The power is generated through the club hinging and re-hinging in the wrists. The looser the wrists, the more clubhead speed that is generated. If you’ve ever had some golf instruction or lessons in the past you will have worked on your wrist hinge but in doing so you were most likely trying to hit the ball solely with your arms. This hitting tightens your wrists and actually slows the club down.
2) Stroke Length: Place a piece of tape on a yardstick at the 18-inch mark (center). Then, place tape every four inches from this center mark. Address the center mark and make strokes to the first piece of tape on the backstroke and the corresponding piece of tape on the forwardstroke. Incorporate this length with the good rhythm from the metronome drill (see #5). Next, place a ball adjacent to the center mark and make your four-inch backstroke and four-inch throughstroke with good rhythm. Hit several putts, then average the distance they travel. Repeat at different length strokes and soon you’ll have a good understanding of how long a stroke is required in any situation.

In this game one of the first beginner golf lessons you must master is the set-up. Without a good set-up you are doomed to an eternity of poor golf and frustration. A good set-up creates a chain reaction to the whole golf swing. So what does it involve?
 – In your normal stance, try stroking through the ball, not at it. Bearing in mind that the ball only rolls on about a half inch wide band, watch this until it comes to a stop. Did it stay upright longer? I think so!
Now that I have tested them I can confirm that they don’t disappoint. Like the 2015 version, the 2017 upgrade includes all the same clubs (i.e. driver, #3 fairway wood, a hybrid, irons from 5-PW and a putter), but the design and technology of the clubs has been improved. They now have larger sweet spots to their predecessor and the irons have a wider sole.
There’s no question that missing putts is the easiest way to put a bloated number on the scorecard. A great drive and a fantastic approach shot can be nullified by a couple of missed putts, and the next thing you know, you are putting a bogey or worse instead of a birdie or par. Sure, it’s frustrating, but like anything, to get better you have to practice.

The correct length putter is one that allows you to stand in a comfortable putting stance with your eyes directly over the ball. To see if your standard putter is the correct length, take your normal stance and grip your club. If your hands are down the shaft, the putter is too long, and if your hands are beyond the end, it’s too short. For a belly putter, take your stance with a standard putter and have an assistant measure from the butt end of the putter to your desired anchor point. Add this distance to the shaft’s length to get the correct belly putter length. For a long putter, take a comfortable, more upright stance, and have an assistant measure from your anchor point to the ball.

3) Body Stability: During the putting motion, it’s imperative that the body remain very still. Any motion will cause your putter path to be inconsistent, which makes solid contact almost impossible. My favorite thought is to imagine a small coin under the ball at address. After my stroke, I don’t look up until I can identify the denomination—usually, this takes a count of one. Keeping your eyes focused on the impact area will greatly limit any tendency to move the body.
That is, they concentrate on “rolling” (not “hitting”) the ball over a spot about 6 inches in front of the ball. They still see the whole putt and visualize it going in, but they use their spot to get aligned. Spot putting helps you move closer to achieving the 4 pillars of good putting (you need all of them to putt your best).
Nowadays it is very common for golfers to use hybrids to replace their lower irons (3-5 irons). Usually hybrids are numbered #3 to #5. The hybrids are easier to hit when compared to the long irons as they have a much wider sole. This means that one can get under the ball more easily with a hybrid. Hybrids combine the elements of woods and irons, making the club convenient for you to hit cleanly.
When choosing them you have to consider your height, build, and strength. If you are tall, you probably need longer and stiffer shafts. You can get standard, mid-sized, and over-sized club heads. Brett recommends over-sized heads for the beginner as they are much more forgiving. He also suggests that you start by getting a putter and a few irons. Your objective is to get used to the correct action: distance should be the last thing to worry about when you are a beginner.

However, how do you know which are the best golf clubs for you? There are golf clubs with steel shafts and golf clubs with graphite shafts (much more expensive, but lighter in weight). There are big headed golf clubs, cavity back golf clubs, and many more.
I often see players attempting to control the distance they hit the ball on the green through the speed of the stroke, but this will not deliver the best consistency. So engage the big muscles, turn around your spine and let the length of the stroke dictate distance.
Few things in golf are more frustrating that discovering you ball is plugged in a bunker. In this video, Justin Rose explains a different approach to the traditional method of playing a plugged bunker shot.

This question was first raised in our recent “Yo, GolfWRX?” episode, leading to a number of responses on Facebook — some better than others. So, for this week’s Two Guys Talkin’ Golf episode, equipment expert Brian Knudson and Editor Andrew Tursky discuss their top-3 sneaker picks to turn into golf shoes. Also, they discuss Tiger Woods’ reported club head speed of 128.4 mph, and whether that’s even possible.

If you watch a good chipper you’ll see that their backswing and follow through are similar sizes. You see a lot of golfers who struggle with chipping making big backswings with little follow through or the opposite, making a small backswing and over accelerating into the ball. A balanced chip shot swing leads to good tempo and makes it easier to deliver the clubface solidly on the back of the ball. It also reduces the desire to “hit” the ball when chipping. Good chippers make a smooth balanced swing and let the ball get in the way. Make some practice strokes with your chipping club and feel the club moving back and forth in nice balanced and smooth motion. Do this without a ball until you get the feeling then add the golf ball. The goal with the ball is the maintain that same balance and tempo. This will lead to solid shots and better distance control.
Our bodies are wired to see things as level. Your subconscious likes flat. Unfortunately, this internal gyroscope is causing you to mis-aim your putter at address, spoiling your good reads (when you make them).
There’s another option that’s even cheaper. Check with any local colleges. Many community colleges and universities offer continuing education courses, and golf is a popular course in such programs. Many school districts also offer continuing or adult education programs, and taking golf lessons through this method can reduce your costs considerably.

The fact that setting up correctly can seem so obvious and even a little mundane, is probably why many amateur golfers completely overlook it. But if you fail to check your setup position on a regular basis (every time you practice isn’t a bad idea) it’s so easy to adopt bad habits.

Alignment is one of those 4 pillars. If you don’t align perfectly every time, the only time you’ll hit a good putt is when you get lucky with a mis-hit or your body compensates (like in the full swing, your subconscious tells your body it needs to make compensatory movements for poor alignment). But none of us want to rely on this as this doesn’t allow for consistent improvement. We all need to know we’re consistently aligned to the target and this putting tip will show you how important it is and what you can do to achieve it.
You can build your swing around these elements by following the videos below. They break the golf swing down into different stages and then give you a series of checkpoints for you to work on at home.
